Here is the thread you will discuss your reviews and opinions on films you have seen. Remember NOT to flame others for their own opinions. Lets get started!

Olympus has Fallen: 6/10. Its your average action flick with the common one-man army. Nothing more and nothing less. It also never explains how the terrorists managed to get an AC-130 and get all the way to Chesapeake Bay without being questioned.

Dead Reviews: Ranking the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Films

Edit: I copy pasted from other sites that I put this on, so if there's no green text like I said I wanted on one of the sites, that's why lol

In honor of this post revolving around the TMNT film franchise, I felt it would be fitting to use the color green for the text ( I couldnt get green on here for some reason so oh well) as I eagerly write about one of my favorite childhood cartoon-turned-into-film franchises of all time, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you know, those heroes in a half shell....turtle power. Enough with the geek out, let's get on with the rankings!

The Movie Talk/Review Thread TMNT%2B1
Quote :

6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993)

A movie that I feel was Turtles in Time on film indirectly, this one is by far one of the worst. Why? No Shredder. I understand wanting to go back in time but I honestly feel they should of went back to the time in the film canon where the Turtles encountered Saki before he became the evil mastermind that he is today. It would of been an interesting take on the Turtles coming across Splinter in his human form. I feel like they also wasted Casey Jones in this one, it was more of a "Hey Elias, what are you doing? Nothing? Wanna be in TMNT 3 and do nothing but look after 4 Japanese warriors who got thrust into the future?" Walker was the best character the Turtles came in contact with and I havent a clue why he wasnt the main villain to begin with. Lord Norinaga was made to look like a wimp on account of his son and his girlfriend essentially having bigger balls than him. Ouch

The Movie Talk/Review Thread TMNT%2B2
Quote :

5. TMNT (2007)

A movie that doesnt know where it wants to fit in with the franchise, TMNT is the only one that's animated as opposed to live action with and without CGI. It's also the shortest of the franchise by coming in at a little over an hour. This one...for some strange reason, also doesnt have the Shredder but it does have Karai and she's now in charge of the foot....but instead we focus on a guy named Winters who is trying to stop monsters from invading Earth. Patrick Stewart and Sarah Michelle Gellar make this film otherwise I probably wouldnt watch it as much as I have.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread TMNT%2B3
Quote :

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Oh boy, this one is coming in at #4 and it's the one the fandom would rather have burn in a dumpster fire but it still beats out TMNTIII and the animated film by a mile. Yes, Megan Fox is still the worst actress of all time whether it be this or Transformers and yes, I'm still conflicted over the portrayal over the Transformer Shredder suit, which....is not the [frick]ing Shredder at all. It also took some getting used to the Turtle designs but I'm honestly glad they didnt change up the origin completely and made them aliens. Eric Sacks has grown on me as a villain and I'm also glad he wasnt the Shredder as well during the final process. This one doesnt answer a lot of questions though...such as why in the hell is Shredder in a mech suit?  How are you getting that much mutagen from the Turtles blood? I dont get it. As much as the fandom hates it, I somehow managed to give it a chance, as I give any film I have interest in seeing.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread TMNT%2B4
Quote :

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Out of the Shadows (2016)

Now this film blows the reboot completely out of the water. It focuses more on the Turtles and introduces the original cartoon character favorites such as Casey Jones, Bebop, Rocksteady and MOTHER [frick]ING KRANG!! I cant stand Krang's voice though, you can tell it's the guy from Everybody Loves Raymond voicing him and it just seems...off. Shredder is lifeless but still badass, Bebop and Rocksteady are amazing and the action scenes with the Turtles are top notch. I know the Bay Turtles arent classics and TBH I dont think anyone really expected them to be, but this one is a guilty pleasure and Id watch it again and again, if I could.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread TMNT%2B5
Quote :

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)

This movie is one of my favorites..not because the Turtles hardly use their weapons and not because any of the originals are in it but because it's FUN to watch. I wish Tatsu would be in the film franchise more because that dude is intimidating as all hell. Keno, not the lottery ticket, is in this film and he's more of a one and done character because I doubt we'll ever see this character in any film ever again. I dont like how Shredder loses much of the intimidation he had in the first film, but since this film was supposed to be more light hearted than the first, I guess I can understand it. The only thing they SHOULDNT of done? The Vanilla Ice bullshit. I'll pass.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread TMNT%2B6
Quote :

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

The movie that started it all. Not much to say other than this is a cult classic and SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH!! I'm sorry, I got a little carried away there. Other than OOTS, this film has the best Foot Clan of any film. OOTS has the badass Foot soldiers, but this one has the BADASS crew. Shredder, Tatsu...scared me to death when I saw this film as a child. Casey Jones....I feel bad for Koteas because he went from this to essentially a cameo in the third. Overall, the best film of the franchise, with the best acting and writing.

This is an older post I did back in the winter, so enjoy!

Ranking the Ring/Ringu Films

Over the past few weeks i had the itching to watch Japanese horror films. I've always heard that J-Horror has some of the most terrifying films ever made and since i'm always on the hunt for films that will scare the living daylights out of me, i decided to give it a go. Finding these films online was tough as not many places really had them uploaded, but i was mainly successful in my quest. Along with watching the original Japanese films, i decided to watch whatever American remake of said films to get a comparison between the 2. For this list i decided to go with Ringu (known as the Ring in the States) and ended with Sadako 3D. Not listed in these rankings are Rasen and The Ring: Virus as i learned Rasen was completely ignored for Ring 2 and Ring: Virus is a remake of the original. So here we go!

The Movie Talk/Review Thread 1.%2BThe%2BRing%2B2
7. The Ring Two

I went with this one at the 7 spot because it never quite captured the magic of the first remake. I realize they were trying to give Samara more of a backstory but nothing really creeped me out. Samara's mother was the creepiest part of the film i think and it kinda takes away from Samara to a point. We go from her just straight up scaring the shit out of people in the first one to all of a sudden going after Rachel because she wants a new "mommy"? The deer scene was also the best scene of the entire movie. Seeing an animal notice there's something about you that doesnt seem quite right is always terrifying.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread 2.%2BRing%2B2
6. Ring 2 (Ringu 2)

This one deals with a son developing the same powers so to speak that Sadako had. This one felt the weakest of the Japanese version to me, mainly because they tried taking the powers away from Sadako via a swimming pool "exorcism" of sorts. I didnt really care too much for this one.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread Ring%2BBirthday
5. Ring 0: Birthday

One of my favorites out of the main Ringu trilogy, this one explores Sadako's backstory indepth and what it was like to see her trying to live a normal life before it all hit the fan. In this one it shows Sadako trying out for a play while everyone suspects that she is under the influence of some kind of evil while people are dying off (including the director). I like the idea of making the audience sympathetic for Sadako, her cast mates dont want her there, there's a woman trying to make her life hell by essentially trying to dig up all the information she can, and everyone finds her to be dangerous, except the costume designer. Eventually Sadako's pure and "evil" form combine to just take everyone out. Amazing film.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread The%2BRing
4. The Ring

I'm pretty sure we all knows what happens in this one. If you see The Ring, you die in 7 days. What's amazing about this one is that they actually have the full video on the DVD as an extra, i've watched it a few times and i'm pretty sure i never got any phone calls nor did i die....unless life being hell makes up for it then i guess we can leave it at that. I really wish they would of shown what Samara actually does to scare these people so bad their faces are contorted. That's what these movies are missing IMO and i really hope they show the actual terror in Rings.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread Sadako%2B3D
3. Sadako 3D

I may catch some flak for this as to why these films are so high on the list because they scared the shit out of me. Instead of watching a cursed video tape, you now watch a video on the Internet of a guy committing suicide and then your laptop or whatever else goes haywire. That's why i think i enjoyed this one more than the previous Ring films, they changed it up and it actually works. You see Sadako in her evil form more than you do in the other ones and this one includes....SADAKO CRICKETS!! Or something that resembles a cricket, either way it was terrifying.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread Ring
2. Ring

The original that spawned everything listed previously. The differences from the American version is that the father of Sadako was a psychic (instead of Samara's father being a horse farmer). If you also watched the tape, you have to make a copy and pass it onto someone else so the curse surrounding you is broken. I would recommend this one over Ring 2.

The Movie Talk/Review Thread Sadako%2B3D%2B2
1. Sadako 3D 2

This is the one that freaked me the hell out. A girl named Nagi is the centerpiece as strange deaths start occuring and after each one, she always seems to be around, implying she is the one that's causing them. It's also assumed she has inherited Sadako's powers due to Sadako possessing her mother in the first film. Instead of Sadako killing her victims via computers, this go round involves any kind of technology, which includes cell phones. This one also takes a turn in becoming a full on possession movie as the jump scares are prevailant. Easily the one that started me the most.

Warcraft: 4/10

I've tried to get into Warcraft for a while but its never really gelled with me, its always seemed cool but i could never get into it the same way as Lord of the Rings. Thats kind of how i felt watching this movie, there's a lot of cool things in it but overall it just wasn't for me. Its not a waste of time, i'd never stop anyone from watching it but i'm not going to watch it twice.

Nerve: 8/10
Lights Out: 3/10

I really liked the concept of Nerve (although the pre-ending bit was kinda dumb and I can think of a way to do it better), and overall kept me hooked. Lights Out I saw with a few friends with no idea of the plot (I went with 'its a scary movie') and holy hell was it both dumb and boring. Only thing I liked was the hot main chick and her apartment (pretty sweet crib). Oh and the trying-to-be-original ending was horribly bland. Shouldve saved my money and saw Ghostbusters in IMAX.

Lights Out sounds like it may be kind of thing. Whenever someone says a horror movie is 'boring' that's usually a sign I'm going to like it. I can't speak for it because I haven't seen it, but I find a majority of slower paced horror movies are slower paced because they're more art related and usually have something to offer than surface value horror. I also find the slow burn subtly creepy kind of movie to often be far more fascinating and disturbing than the faster paced horror movies that are usually filled with jump scares. Which is why I have a hard time getting along with horror fans, despite watching a lot of horror myself. Razz

Anyway, last 5 movies I watched with links to my (short) reviews:
Mirrors- 3/10
Dungeons & Dragons- 1/10
They Look Like People- 8/10
The Black Dahlia- 2/10
Star Trek Beyond- 7/10

And highly recommend They Look Like People, it's available on the US Netflix.

I agree with that in some ways. Not all slow horrors are good though either. I prefer a whore movie that sinks deep enough into your mind to keep you on edge for a while with more plot than just cheap jump scares. The occasional jump scare is fine but a horror movie thats just about popping out at your or relentless gore is generally lame.

Little Women (1933) 6/10
Little Women might be one of my favorite novels, and the 1994 film adaptation of it my favorite flicks, but this 30's version certainly is not. The sets don't look particularly convincing and realistic for time period, there's no sense of time passing through, and some crucial sections of the book are missing while others less important are there. I find Katharine Hepburn overrated as actress and unsuitable for Jo's role. Still, as I enjoy the source material, I still got something out of it. The other three sisters were portrayed rather well and there were interesting individual elements here and there.

Girl on the Train (2016) 7/10
Not many seem to like this one but I found it rather alright. The plot is bit confusing to follow as the timeline of events in made non-linear on purpose but about half way through it started getting easier to sort things out. However, I don't really understand why they had to construct that way, other than to create illusion of some kind of mystery plot which it really wasn't, not really. But all in all I don't really have too much to complain about. Solid directing, solid performances from everybody. Though Lisa Kudrow seems to have aged like 30 years since I last saw her, too bad.

Sicario (2015) 8/10
Surprisingly thrilling film about drug cartels and US-Mexican border relations. Great, exciting action scenes without any over-the-top shenanigans you tend to see too often nowadays. It's kind of hard to describe without spoiling anything but the "advisor" characters were pretty damn well written. Definitely recommend it, even if you don't care about the subject matter too much. Now, I won't lie, just like Girl on the Train and numerous other films lately I watched this only because of Emily Blunt - and she was great as usual.

The Terminal (2004) 8/10
Wasn't actually aware this was comedy-drama, instead I had always thought it as just drama. Not that I have anything against drama, most of my favorite films are pure drama, but seeing Tom Hanks doing more of a comedic performance again is just great, and great call back to his early career. Also I had somehow forgot this was directed by Spielberg? Maybe if I had done my research I would have seen this earlier then! Anyway, while I would say I enjoyed the first half of the film way more than the second, you know because it's more about him vs world, it was still throughout a good film. First and foremost with a true heart, and that's what I pretty much expected. I would say the only real flaw was how fast Hank's character learned to speak and understand english, and with relatively correct articulation, but that's just typical movie logic and trying not to get stuck in details for too long so whatever. It's the message that matters

Star Trek Beyond 7/10
I've been delaying watching this for a reason, but wow, a Star Trek product that actually felt like Star Trek product? Oh my, it must've been over a decade since the last time that happened, you know in Enterprise (as lame as that show was)! I must say that this was quite an improvement over the trash can that was Into Darkness. I mean there are still references and callbacks, but they felt appropriate for the most part and integrated to the story. Not insulting in-your-face nonsense like in that horrible previous one. And all in all, the whole film felt like a breath of fresh air. That's not to say it was great, even calling it 'good' is bit on a stretch given that the core plot is the same revenge & superweapon rehash and there's a lot of confusing, unnecessary stuff all over the place. The action scenes still tend to take way too long, like in this modern age of big CGI blockbusters they often do. But the feel of the world is finally there. And characters were pretty spot on now, unlike before I actually liked all of the Enterprise staff. Kirk was like Kirk, not hyperbolic whacko crazyman. Spock was like Spock, not angry and moody emotional weirdo. Uhura was Uhura, not sexy action girl doing stuff she really shouldn't. And so on. Karl Urban as Bones is still amazing, once again the best part of the film. Would have loved to see him in the TV world, you know where Star Trek actually belongs. In movies it's never quite got there. And on that note, I'm cautiously optimistic of the new Discovery series premiering this year.

My overview:

Star Trek TV Series
TOS 7/10
TNG 10/10
DS9 10/10
VOY 6/10

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) 7/10
Romantic comedies, yuck. But this one managed to pull it through fine. I mean, it could have done without the unnecessary love triangle altogether as well as removed quite a bit of the usual cliches these things tend to have, but I guess as it's based on novel -obviously which I've not read- they couldn't swing around things too much. Regardless, McGregor and Blunt did had good chemistry, so it didn't fail in it's core. And never mind the romance thing, the actual plot about instituting salmon population and fly fishing in the middle of desert in Yemen was pretty interesting and funny. The guy playing the Arab sheikh was written really well, and should've gotten even more screen time. Some of the supposedly comedic side characters really weren't that great however, and the assassination subplot was downright stupid (why the **** would the sheik's opposition decide to kill him in Yemen, but then have that assassin travel all the way to UK and there just try to shoot him with pistol in bright daylight when he's fishing, announcing his presence in advance????). Anyway luckily those things player smaller part and most of the film concentrated on the absurdity of the premise.

Just one-liners this time! Mainly because nothing interesting really...

Vantage Point (2008) 5/10
Presidential assassination attempt shown from multiple angles starts somewhat okay-ishly but turns quickly into headache inducing action-shlock trash that thinks it's more clever than it actually is, however the upside is that it's extremely short.

The Young Victoria (2009) 6/10
I like period pieces, and even costume dramas, but not particularly of this specific subject matter so it didn't do much for me despite some interesting plot elements, great portrayals and impressive settings.

Rogue One (2016) 4/10
Fan-film the movie, fan-service the movie, I'm not sure which one this piece of unnecessary filler cow tried to be more, but nevertheless I hated it almost as much as the incompetent Lucas prequels.

Jackie (2016) 8/10
To be perfectly honest, I knew next to nothing of Jackie Kennedy before I saw this, so when I first saw Natalie Portman doing impression of her I - like many others I presume - it was a bad joke? The speech and facial patterns of her are so... irritating? But no, after watching real 60's footage, Portman really does spot-on personation. And overall it's interesting film not only because of the quality but because there's no character arc or anything really, just the immediate flow after the assasination and her feelings. It was also interesting because I watched this the day before John Hurt died, so it literally was the last thing I saw him in.

Arrival (2016) 7/10
Modern telling of the Encounters of Third Kind I suppose. It was an disappointment to me. After all the hype and praise it got I was expecting more. I mean, it was still very well directed and produced, with some extremely memorable visuals, but it started felling flat mid way through, and honestly the ending was just plain stupid. Much like in Interstellar actually. But while Interstellar too had dumb finale, the rest of that flick made up for it and overall felt more meaningful to me.

Wind Chill (2007) 7/10
Not much to say here, pretty standard horror of girl and guy getting stuck in the middle of nowhere in winter with weird things happening around. First two acts were rather good (although some of the things that happened were never explained afterwards) and in fact couple of scenes even made me... chill a bit? Get it? Hehe. Yeah. In the end it started sliding into cliches and unsatisfying plot revelations, but overall this one was pretty much what of what I had expected. With few fixes and details it could've been quite good, but as it is, it was still alright.

Irresistible (2006) 5/10
No idea how they got Sam Neill, Susan Sarandon and Emily Blunt for this thing, as it seems like a cheap direct to dvd production. There's no sense of direction and imagination and the plot isn't even worth talking about, other than what they do with all three main characters is highly convoluted. I didn't even finish this film in single go, but at least in five separate days by watching little chunks of it. It was under 100 minutes but felt like 3 hours. It was soooo god damn boring.

Whiplash (2014) 9/10
I love Black Swan, it's easily in my top 5 films of all time, so when my friend suggested this one as very similiar experience, I just had to watch it... even though the subject matter, you know drumming and music in general, wasn't particularly  interesting before I started. But in the end I had to admit it - Whiplash was pretty damn great. I would say, that after Melancholia and Turbo Kid, the best film I've seen in the two years or so? It has abusive and artistic thematic elements of Black Swan, which I liked, but still it's own unique world and atmosphere. I was quite edge of my seat with the craziness of it and recommend it to anyone.

Who else is extremely excited for The Mummy, opening on June 9th? I have to say this looks really good. Dark Universe looks like it's going to be awesome.

Yeah I get the sense that this universe they are building up can be something really special. At least I hope it can be. I will be tuning in either way
