John Carpenter says that the upcoming Halloween movie will ignore all the others made since the original Halloween movie.

It looks like he's doing to this what James Cameron is doing to all the Terminator movies made after T2: Judgement Day.

That's a shame. I really like Halloween 2.

I guess Carpenter thinks that the whole franchise is messed up starting with Halloween H20 and wants a new canon.
Carpenter never liked the sister angle that was brought in on H2. He thought that the original premise of an escaped mental patient butchering babysitters on Halloween night was enough and believed that giving a "reason" made Michael less scary. In fact, I've seem some pretty compelling evidence in the past few years that would suggest, disregarding the end credits, that Judith Myers wasn't intended to be Michael's sister at all when the first movie came out. In the course of the film, nowhere is it said that Michael is a Myers. He's referred to only as "Michael" or "The Boogeyman", and in the script he's only referred to as "The Shape". The only connection between Michael and Judith Myers is the end credits, where Tony Moran (who played Michael in the unmasking scene) is credited as "Michael Myers, age 23" Though the timeline is technically off here as Michael is 21 in the movie, which Loomis states in Halloween 2.

Halloween 2 is a lot like Jaws 2. Maybe TLW to non-JP fans. An okay installment that the series could have done without but not absolutely terrible.
I really would consider H2 to be the TLW of Halloween movies to many fans. Most fans consider it on par with the original. Not really sure what people outside of that say about it, though I guess I always assumed most liked it. I think comparing it to Jaws 2 in some ways works. The tension of the original is sacrificed in place of more blood and guts. Universal ordered more blood in Halloween 2, in an effort to compete with Friday the 13th, which had been released the previous year. Personally, I find that Halloween 2 is a bit slow for my taste and I think that it lacks the delicate mix between action and creep that the original had. I feel like H2 is a crawler compared to H1, and spends too much time making Michael creep about and too little time actually letting him have some action. H2 uses a lot of implicit horror, which while good for some movies, isn't what H1 established. The kills were over too quickly in H2, when in H1 they were more drawn out, letting the audience feel the very last gasp of breath being shuddered out if victims chests. Don't get me wrong, I love H2, but it fails to keep the pace of the original.
