DInosaur Populations of Isla Sorna by DiabloGuapo Empty
PostSubject: DInosaur Populations of Isla Sorna by DiabloGuapo   DInosaur Populations of Isla Sorna by DiabloGuapo Icon_minitimeTue Jun 07, 2016 7:04 pm

In anticipation of the release of Jurassic World, my brother and I have been watching the previous films. While watching TLW the other day, I came up with a question; how many Tyrannosaurs(or any other species for that matter) are on the island? I've searched the topics and I couldn't find if this had a thread already or not. Hammond said that the animals are flourishing, meaning that there must be some sort of equilibrium between the different species of dinosaurs there. But what is that equilibrium? Since Tyrannosaurus is an apex predator, it would be a keystone species. So let's focus on them for now.

Note: I'm not an expert on paleontology or biology, so this is just my best guess based on what I know and what I've read/heard.

To find out how many Tyrannosaurus Isla Sorna can sustain we first need to find a real life model to compare it to. Thinking to myself, I asked, "What's an example of an apex predator that is only found on one or two isolated islands?" My answer: Komodo dragons. Komodo dragons are only found on a few islands, but on Komodo itself, there are 1700 dragons. The island of Komodo is 390 square km(150 square miles). From what I can tell from maps of Isla Sorna, it is a triangular island about 20 miles by 20 miles. My best guess is that the island is 157 square km(200 square miles).

The next question; how much food would a population of Tyrannosaurus need a year? Now I know Tyrannosaurs are NOT lizards, but the principal still stands. Komodo dragons can eat up to 80% of their weight in one setting, and they need to eat at least 12 times a year. This is a little tricky. This is an extreme on both ends; the maximum they can eat at a meal and the minimum amount of meals they need to eat a year. Since I don't have access to better information, I'll just have to make do. Let's say the max they can eat times the minimum amount meals they need to eat equals out. An average size Komodo dragon is 150 pounds. So, 150 x 0.8 x 12 = 1440 pounds per year.

Now let's find out how much a population of Komodo dragons eat a year. There are 1700 of them on the island, and I assume that includes infants and juveniles. I don't have access to any age charts nor do I know how much the young eat, but average size of an adult is 150 pounds, some are bigger and some are smaller, so let's go with that. 1700 x the 1440 pounds a 150 individual eats a year = 2448000 pounds or 1224 tons.

Now how much does a Tyrannosaurus eat a year? I remember reading an article that has been posted online, printed in magazines, and published in books (some of you might remember it) that said a 4.5 ton Tyrannosaurs (rather small for a T. rex I would say) would have needed to eat 292 lawyers that weighed 150 pounds a year. 292 x 150 = 43800 pounds or 21.9 tons. Since 4.5 tons is rather small for a T. rex, let's bump that up to a more reasonable size. Since I've seen size estimates for Tyrannosaurus range for as little as 5 tons to as outlandish as 20 tons, I would say 7 tons would be fair for a realistic average for an adult specimen. Assuming the amount they need to eat is proportionate to their size, a 7 ton T. rex would need to eat 34 tons a year.

Once again, I know Tyrannosaurus was not a giant lizard, but it's the best example I can come up with. 1700 Komodo dragons would need to eat about 1224 tons a year as a population. One Tyrannosaurus would need to eat 34 tons a year. 1224/34 = 36. Isla Sorna is 200 sq. miles and Komodo is 150. 200/150 x 36= 48.

Forty-eight!? Could you imagine that many Tyrannosaurs on one island!? The number would probably be a lot lower due to me using the average size of adult specimens as the basis and not accounting for juveniles. Also considering the fact that all predators are not one-hundred percent successful all of the time, I think it would be fair to cut that number in half. Does twenty-four Tyrannosaurs on Isla Sorna sound realistic? Is my reasoning off? And what about the other types of dinosaurs? How many do you think there are of them? Let me know what you think.

This was originally made by DiabloGuapo and I do not claim any bit of it.

About 44 square miles, if I recall correctly.

I can't imagine there being 24 freaking tyrannosaurs on Isla Sorna, let alone 48. It just doesn't seem feasible with all the other big predators there, such as Ceratosaurus, Carnosaurus, Suchomimus, Baryonyx, and Spinosaurus. That's a lot of big animals roaming an island that isn't all that sizable, eating a ton of food daily. I don't think the herbivore population could sustain it.

Personally, and this is without any numbers or statistics, I think 8-10 tyrannosaurs is plenty.

These estimates would make Sorna a VERY crowded place. Judging by predator/prey ratios, I'm guessing it probably goes something like this for the carnivores alone:

Dilos: No more than 15 adults at any given time
T. rex: No more than 5 adults
Nublarensis Raptors: maybe up to 3 packs of 10-15
Sornaensis Raptors: 1 pack of roughly 20 adults and adolescents. Numerous juveniles, most of which will not survive to adulthood.
Pteranodon longiceps: A flock constituting a healthy population of maybe 20 or so? Probably no more than 30 grown adults at any given time
Spino: 1
Ceratosaurus: Maaaybe 10?
Herrerasaurus, Metris, Baryonyx, and Segis: Probably the same as the Dilos, being medium carnivores

The prey populations would of course be MUCH larger than this, and their numbers would be in constant flux.

Actually, that equals to roughly 400 square miles, making it a relatively large island.
