Fluent? No, but I took tow years of German so I can do a little bit with that. Never kept up my studies though so a lot has been lost to time.

I can speak Spanish nearly fluently. I get stuck on some words from time to time. Because of Spanish, I can also take a few guesses when reading off another romance language, especially Portuguese. I've slowed down a bit on my studying of Japanese and I've also considered French, Portuguese, and Italian.

My second language is English so yeah. I tried French when I went to highschool but flunked it, the leap from my first school to the other was just too great for me to keep up. But I know Swedish at least.

I speak German near-fluently, but I've lost a lot of what I've learned since I've been in school.

Ich kann Deutsche sprache, aber meine Deutsche ist nicht gut. Razz

Technically sight is my first language due to my long history of hearing problems. English is my primary, but it is registered in my brain similar to how second languages are registered in the minds of others. I did three years of German in high school, buts its more like a third language to me (for the reasons I mentioned above). Add on the fact that I don't get to express it regularly (I don't know many German speakers who know the language well enough to help me remain really good at it), and you get my rather slim range of German.

I want to learn Spanish, though, simply because a ton of my fellow film-makers at my school speak Spanish (including a woman I really like).

Voxel loves German.

Anyway, I know some Spanish. I should know a lot since my mother and her family were basically all primary speakers of it emigrating from Cuba to America but she was fluent in English by the time I was born and didn't speak Espanol around the house. And all the Italian I learned is basically gone from disuse.

Finnish - fluent
English - excellent at understanding, fairly good at writing, awful at speaking
Swedish - forced to study for 6 years and can't remember anything (except random words and couple of most basic sentences), hated it with passion

I'd like to start (self) studying French at some point, but haven't got around it yet. Some day...

I know some very limited Spanish (pretty much what I learned in high school), but I'm only fluent in English.

Fluent English on account of being born and raised in England.

Aaaand... that's it. Three useless years of German class in school failing to stick and a severe lack of opportunities or real reasons to learn or speak other languages have left me a miserable monolingual.

Yay.

But you're lucky in being fluent english as you don't "need" to know the language of most countries you visit, definitely not in Western world, while the people in those countries do need to know your language. You can just go to Germany or Italy or New Zealand or wherever and just use your mother tongue, and people will have to respond to that in varying degrees. I'm jealous of that, as I'm sort of embarrassed using my broken sounding english accent anywhere.

Definitely true, but it's hard not to feel just a little envious.

I'm envious of those kids whose parents teach them second language from the very first instance, and so they have "two first languages" which they can speak fluently and switch between like it was absolutely nothing.
