The Mark Degler thread

After watching some of JP3 for reasons unknown to me, I figured I'd just make a silly, completely random thread about everyone's (well, at least a few of us...) least favorite character in the JP franchise. Does this fine, upstanding citizen have a future in the series? I can't think of one good reason why he should reappear, but at least we have this LEGO interpretation:

JP5 should begin with a shot of Mark Degler's grave and a beginning shot saying he died of dysentry.

I kinda feel bad for the guy. He's just a hate sink. He hasn't actually done anything wrong, but he married the ex-girlfriend of the protagonist of the first film so he's automatically a bad guy. He seems friendly with Alan, though, and when he learns about Alan being trapped on Site B he IMMEDIATELY uses his connections to send in the military to extract him.

He's that guy you'd probably be cool with, except he's with the girl you like.

Really, the problem with isn't Mark, it's Alan. Yeah, Mark gets the hate for being the other man, but he's actually a really nice guy, and still very much supports and is involved in Alan and Ellie's continued friendship. Despite all the character building Alan got in JP, he somehow came out the other side extremely bitter, even losing a lot of love for his work in the process.

Or we could just blame David Koepp and Joe Johnston.

And it would never be seen or mentioned again, nor would it have anything to do with the rest of the movie! As a sidenote, it would be kind of a grim shoutout to Gennaro's book death Razz

Mark really does seem to be a cool guy, doesn't he? It's not the poor guy's fault that most of the fandom wishes he didn't exist! He basically entered a shipping war in which nobody was rooting for him Sad

That also works! I hate what they did with Alan's character in JP3 - they basically ignored his character development from JP1, even though there was no reason to do so. As a character, Mark is pretty cool, but his introduction is pretty much a deliberate slap in the face to a lot of JP fans (especially if you read the way it's scripted).

Yeah, that shows sometimes how "protagonist character" fanboyism is annoying. I have nothing against Mark, ppl are just bitten because he married Alan's coworker and for some reason ppl think Alan should marry Ellie instead.

Now, a character that should be really the least favorite of the series should be Amanda Kirby or Nick Van Owen.

Well if he's dead, that means Ellie and Grant can have that much belayed kiss we only saw in pictures of deleted scenes! And is it weird to say that I would actually kinda like to see that in the fifth or sixth film?
