Bio: A piscivore (fish eater) from Cretaceous North America,
Pteranodon is actually not a dinosaur, but from a group that is closely related called Pterosaurs, which are flying reptiles.
Pteranodon was the size of a small airplane, and mostly glided on it's leathery wings rather than flying. This saved energy for the animal, and allowed it to fly prolonged distances.
Pteranodon is known to have a striking form of sexual dimorphism, in which the male has long, flowing crests, and the female have short stubby crests.
Role in Jurassic Park: Initially,
Pteranodon was meant to have a much larger role in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," including a scene of the survivors hang gliding off a cliff only to encounter
Pteranodons, and then disturbing nesting Pteranodons in the Worker Village as the survivors escape Isla Sorna. Because the movie was rewritten to incorporate the San Diego scene,
Pteranodon was reduced to a small cameo at the end of the film.
Pterandon would receive a much more prominent role in the next film, "Jurassic Park ///," when a group comprising of Alan Grant, Billy Brennan, and Amanda, Paul and Eric Kirby enter the Isla Sorna aviary enclosure to reach a small barge at the bottom of a ravine. There, they encounter nesting
Pteranodons, which kidnap Eric. Eric is rescued from the infant
Pteranodons thanks to the efforts of Bill Brennan, but Billy is nearly killed in the process.
In Jurassic World,
Pteranodons are part of the aviary attraction alongside
Dimorphodon and are spooked into attacking park visitors when the
Indominus rex breaks into the aviary. After disrupting and downing Simon Masrani's helicopter, killing Masrani, they head straight to the Main Street, where both species of Pterosaurs frenzy around visitors. One Pteranodon attacks Claire Dearing's assistant, Zara, only to drop her in the
Mosasaurus Lagoon, where both are eaten. Another
Pteranodon attempts to lift a baby
Triceratops, but fails and drops it. The
Pteranodon are subdued by ACU forces using tranquilizer guns. Many
Pteranodon are seen sitting around the Main Street in the closing shot of the film.
