Anybody here have a collection of fossils? I have a couple of little pieces that I've picked up from the ground:

But my pride and joy is the Trilobite imprint I carted home one day as a kid:

I wanna start a collection. I've been thinking about buying those supposed Spinosaur teeth off of eBay to kickstart, but I'm worried they are fake.

I saw that too. It's pretty cheap actually. I think it's fake/replica.

I've got a small collection myself, all geniune, handpicked Swedish fossils. All around the Ordovician-Silurian period I think, all from Öland and Gotland except one trilobite which is from Kinnekulle.

(Pretty poor quality as I took the photos with my phone)
Spoiler:

My favorites are the trilobite:

And the shell:

So I will post pics of my stuff when I get the chance.

However I think with the closing of JPLegacy I would like to see if its possible to try to move on from dinosaurs to holocene mammals in fossil collecting to some extent.

I dug up half of the fossils I have whilst the other half consists of fossils purchased from my local museum. My favourites are my two hand-sized Trilobites and a beautifully-preserved Ammonite that dates back to the mid Jurassic.

Still need to post pics of my stuff but decided to renew the topic with a question. What are your guys opinion of fossil collecting in general? I recently came across a store that sells fossils and I admit I've been tempted by that, since some of them seem pretty affordable. Would you buy fossils from a licensed vendor?

Depends. Some of it can be fun and harmless, like fossil teeth collection, or collecting other small items that aren't very rare. However, I dislike when bits of larger animals bones are chopped up and sold. These are typically indicative of fossil poachers, people who raid dig sites for large fossilized bones, then chop them up to avoid getting caught and sell off the pieces.

Yeah I get what you mean, some stuff out there that Ive seen in fossil/Rock stores that I have my eye on that are kind of small seem okay to get. However it's when it gets to the larger stuff that I start to get uncomfortable. Like say a full cave paw for 2k etc. Or a large fossil fish imprinted in sandstone. Idk, I mean itfeels liek a neat thing to collect but I dont want to do it at the cost of science. So next time I go to that store I might get something that looks more common-ish but still stands out.
