Bio: One of the middle-sized sauropods from the Jurassic period,
Apatosaurus means "deceptive lizard" due to it's initial misidentification with
Brontosaurus. The mix up was caused when paleontologists mixed up a Camarasaurus skull with an
Apatosaurus body. Up until 2015, it was believed that there was no
Brontosaurus, until a reexamination of the skeletons found that there was enough of a difference to justify the two genera.
Apatosaurus's pencil like teeth were perfect for stripping leaves from branches, where they would travel down the animal's immensely long neck and down to it's gizzard. There, stones would grind the vegetation down to a pulp where it could be digested in the sauropod's stomach and intestines. When threatened by predators, the
Apatosaurus' size was it's best defense. When that wasn't enough,
Apatosaurus could use the end of it's tail like a whip, and could deliver enough of a shock to crack bone in potential predators.
Role in Jurassic Park: Apatosaurus' first evidence of being in Jurassic Park movies were skeletons of them found in the Raptor nest on Isla Sorna, as seen in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park". However, the animal itself would not be seen in the flesh until it was put on display in Jurassic World, seen among other herbivores in the Gyrosphere Valley. Ultimately, there are several Apatosaurus slain by the
Indominus rex, at which point animal trainer Owen Grady realizes that the
Indominus is killing for sport, not for food.
